The Home Life Photography Project {January 2016}

I’m joining in with Clare’s (Maybush Studio) new ‘Home Life Photography Project’. As soon as I read this post detailing the project, I knew I wanted to take part. I’m always striving to try and take better photos and I personally find candid, every day family life the most interesting subject to photograph.

I must admit, sharing these photos makes me feel quite vulnerable. I’m inviting you into our home to see our cluttered corners, our messy hair (and in my case, make-up-less face), our scruffy clothes and many other less than flattering aspects of our home life! You know, the bits we normally try to hide. ;)

Date photos were taken: Sunday 3rd January 2016

Camera used: Canon G7X

Filters used: VSCO Cam 01

This Sunday was about as ordinary as it gets for us. The last day of the weekend is usually dedicated to ‘chores’ – cleaning out the guinea pig cage, dusting and vacuuming throughout the whole house, meal planning for the week ahead – that kind of stuff. All pretty mundane.

There’s a bit of repetition in this collection because I couldn’t decide between a few of the similar photos. Hopefully with your feedback, I’ll get better at the selection process!

The Home Life Photography Project {January 2016}

Initially, I didn’t intend for these photographs to be in black and white. But after playing around with the first few shots and realising a B&W filter masks the bad lighting (it was hideously grey day), I stuck with it.

Which photo is your favourite?

Please leave any constructive criticism in the comments. As I mentioned earlier, I am trying to improve my photography so I really appreciate your feedback.

Fantastic, love that first shot. That’s how I feel when I’m hoovering too and the guinea pig is a genius shot.

    • Jenna January 4, 2016 / 3:07 pm

      Thanks so much! :)

It was quite hard to get a good photo of Dexter (my guinea pig) because he moves so blummin’ fast! xx

  2. Avatar January 4, 2016 / 10:01 am

Oh these are so lovely Jenna! My fave is the one overlooking your feet. I love that they are in black and white too. xx

    • Jenna January 4, 2016 / 3:06 pm

Thanks so much, Katy. I think that’s one of my faves too as I often just sit there and stare at my two favourite people while they’re unaware. :) xx

They’re all brilliant! I LOVE your first photo of Jasmine, fantastic! (And a very familiar expression… what is it with these toddlers eh?!) and the one of the guinea pig looking down the tunnel at the camera! Brilliant photos and the B&W really works! x

    • Jenna January 4, 2016 / 3:14 pm

      Thanks so much, Maddy! :)

Heh, yes – we see a lot of that facial expression at the moment! She was getting frustrated because she was too small to push the vacuum by herself. #toddlerproblems xx

These are FABULOUS photos, I love them! You’ve totally nailed it with the first one, real honest family life and I love the different angles you have used, I’m going to have to up my game! I also love that you are the first person to find my hidden bonus badges! ;-) I’ve just decided I’m going to have to start a Pinterest board for the best photos, purely because I want to see Jasmine’s growly face again!

    • Jenna January 4, 2016 / 3:11 pm

Aw – thank you so much, Clare. You set the bar pretty high so I’m relieved mine aren’t totally shocking! Thanks so much for starting this project – this has been the most fun I’ve had using my camera in quite a while. I’m sure there will be more of Jasmine’s growly face to come! :D

I love the hidden bonus badges – I think I’m going to use them all on rotation! xx

  5. Avatar January 4, 2016 / 10:59 am

I love the first photo, it looks like your toddler has a strong personality :) The second one of the hamster is cool too. I love photography myself but I need to improve my skills. I think you have a talent for taking photos!

    • Jenna January 4, 2016 / 3:04 pm

Heh, ‘strong personality’ is certainly one way of putting it! ;)

Thank you so much for such a lovely comment. My husband tells me I have ‘an eye for photography’ but I never believe him! xx

Such fantastic photos! I really love the one with the gerbil going through the tunnel!

    Happy New Year

    Laura x x x

    • Jenna January 4, 2016 / 3:00 pm

      Thanks so much, Laura.

      He’s a guinea pig but I won’t tell him you called him a gerbil! ;) x

This sounds like a lovely idea for a project – I want to improve my photography this year. The black and white photos are so stunning x

    • Jenna January 4, 2016 / 3:19 pm

      It’s such a lovely idea, isn’t it?

Thanks so much, Rebecca. :) xx

Brilliant photos! I love the second one of the guinea pig, its facial expression is priceless. I’m sorry I have no criticism, I am the world’s worst photographer and in a new low point (even for me) my three year old was given a camera for Christmas by a family friend and she now has a better camera than me.xx

    • Jenna January 5, 2016 / 9:39 am

Thanks so much, Natalie. Dexter (our guinea pig) was very curious about the camera. It was still hard to photograph him though because he moves so quickly. I think you should borrow the three year old’s camera! :) xx

  9. Avatar January 4, 2016 / 6:37 pm

These are brilliant. I love the photo of Jasmine hoovering. And of the photos of the Guinea pig in the tunnel. Also, you look so miserable in that photo of you walking Heidi. Bless you. It was a miserable day on Sunday. I think the photos you have chosen are perfect. A real insight into your life and the real you. I love it! Hugs Lucy xxxx

    • Jenna January 5, 2016 / 9:36 am

Thanks so much, Lucy. :) I think the first one of Jasmine is my new favourite photo of her as it totally captures her, um, fiery nature! ;) Haha, I was SO miserable out on that walk. The weather was awful and I didn’t want to be out in it at all. Pets eh? Who’d have ’em?! Also, I can’t quite get over how dark the circles are around my eyes. Need a few more early nights me thinks! xxx

I think the black and white looks great – and I agree it really does help to mask bad lighting. In this instance I think it really adds to the mood of the shots x

    • Jenna January 5, 2016 / 9:32 am

Thanks, Colette. A B&W filter masks a multitude of sins but you’re right – it does add to the mood of the photos too. :)

  11. Avatar January 4, 2016 / 9:38 pm

I love the last photo! It is very cute and a lovely moment. I like the black and white, I too am trying to improve my photography skills. I also have the Canon G7x camera, I asked Maybush about taking photos inside and I would love to take part in this project but I am rubbish at getting good photos inside. She is thinking about doing a blog post on it! It woud be super useful.

    • Jenna January 5, 2016 / 9:30 am

It is a sweet photo, isn’t it? My husband is terrible for looking at the camera as soon as I get it out so it was nice to get a unposed photo of the pair of them. I never realised quite how popular the G7X was, loads of bloggers seem to have it. It is a fab little camera. :) I know what you mean about taking photos inside. My house is incredibly dark at the best of times, let alone in the winter. It would be fab if Clare did do a blog post about it – very helpful! xx

  12. Avatar January 4, 2016 / 10:17 pm

These are lovely photos! Especially love the first – capturing so much there!
I’ll be glad for summer with some light again.

    • Jenna January 5, 2016 / 9:26 am

Thank you, Zoe. The first one is my favourite – just about sums up my daughter at the moment! Fiery. ;)

Me too – it’s so hard to take good photos in this light. xx

  13. Avatar January 4, 2016 / 10:21 pm

Aww lovely round up. I really love your third image and the angle looking up on you. I too was really excited to read this post and want to improve on my photography. Happy New Year! x #HomeLifeProject

    • Jenna January 5, 2016 / 9:25 am

Thanks Kerri – I didn’t know about the project until late morning on Sunday so I didn’t have a lot of daylight hours to take photos but I’m really pleased with the ones I did get. Your photography is already fab so can’t wait to see it get even better. xx

  14. Avatar January 5, 2016 / 11:02 am

Jenna you KNOW I adore your photography. You capture mood so well. Your shots are amazing. I love them in black & white – the first one is my favourite, it has real personality. You have inspired me to try new angles as mine are always head-on xx

    • Jenna January 5, 2016 / 3:06 pm

Thanks so much Jess – that’s really kind of you to say. :) When I take photos I spend a lot of time laying on the floor or trying to get up high. I love playing around with different angles. xx

  15. Avatar January 5, 2016 / 11:04 am

I really love the black & white. I agree that it so hard to get good lighting shots during the winter months. I do like the first photo because it is a true reflection of life with a child. Thank you for sharing your day with us. #HomeLifeProject

    • Jenna January 5, 2016 / 2:30 pm

Thanks, Christina. I’m not sure if I’ll do my future photos in B&W or not. I do really like it, though. :)

You’re very welcome, I’m glad you enjoyed them. xx

  16. Avatar January 5, 2016 / 12:52 pm

The second guinea pig shot is brilliant, but the first one makes me laugh – did he not want his pic taken?

    • Jenna January 5, 2016 / 2:25 pm

I’ll be honest – trying to take a photo of him was an absolute pain in the arse. ;) xx

    • Jenna January 5, 2016 / 9:06 pm

      Thanks so much, Emma. x

  17. Avatar January 5, 2016 / 11:21 pm

I love the guinea pig ones. I think black and white’s great – helpful for covering up photography problems, and makes pictures look more dramatic.

    • Jenna January 6, 2016 / 2:13 pm

      Thanks, Emma. :)

Oh totally, the lighting is so shoddy at this time of year, especially for indoor photography.

  18. Avatar January 6, 2016 / 3:47 pm

Lovely photos, my fave has to be there first one! Such a fab expression! x

    • Jenna January 7, 2016 / 2:21 pm

Thanks, Alex. :) If only you could hear the sound that went with the expression!! xx

  19. Avatar January 7, 2016 / 2:03 pm

Lovely photos Jenna I have said it from when I first started reading your blog I love your photos! The first and last are my favourite xx

    • Jenna January 7, 2016 / 2:33 pm

      Thanks so much, Amy.

They are my two favourites too. :) xx

  20. Avatar January 11, 2016 / 12:14 am

Gorgeous set of photos Jenna! Love, love, love the hamster one – fantastic perspective, and the first one is a winner too! #HomeLifeProject

    • Jenna January 12, 2016 / 9:59 pm

      Thank you so much, Maria.

The #HomeLifeProject is such a fun project to be apart of. I’m already looking forward to seeing everyone’s photos next month. xx

  21. Avatar January 14, 2016 / 9:26 pm

OMG Jenna these are incredible photos so real, I love them all but the first one of Jasmine is fantastic, and the hamster so artistic, I genuinely love them x

    • Jenna January 15, 2016 / 2:38 pm

Thank you so much for your kind words, Sarah. I’m so glad you like them. xx

  22. Avatar January 20, 2016 / 11:21 am

What a lovely project Jen — and fab photos too :) You have the same camera as me — I wish I knew where all the controls are!! Sometimes I seem to stumble across what I’m looking for relatively easily — but the next time I actively look for it, I can’t find it!! Love the first pic — really fabulous. And although you say the lighting is pants — I love it!! xx

    • Jenna January 20, 2016 / 2:16 pm

It’s such a brilliant idea for a project! :) I had no idea you had the G7X too! I know what you mean about the controls, I still haven’t quite got the hang of them yet. Thanks for your kind comments, I’m glad you like them. :) xx
