Jasmine’s 21 month update

Holy moly, that 2nd birthday is really creeping up on us now. Just three months to go!

I feel like Jasmine’s 20th month has been a pretty tough one as we’ve had teething, colds, sleep deprivation and tantrums. Thankfully, as the month comes to an end, the teeth have popped through, we’re mostly over the colds, sleep is returning to normal and the tantrums… well, they are still rife but you can’t win them all. ;)

Changes/Behaviour:

Jasmine has been trying hard to assert her independence this month and wants to do everything herself. Don’t dare try to help her put her clothes and shoes on, or brush her teeth, or change her nappy, or wipe her hands… the list goes on! Unfortunately, her motor skills aren’t quite fine tuned enough to successfully do all of those things herself so it leads to her getting very frustrated. I do feel for her.

She’s reached a new level of hatred for nappy changes (as she’s never much liked them). A couple of months ago she would’ve happily told us that she had a dirty nappy that needed changing but now she lies about it!

“Jasmine, do you have a dirty nappy?” *knowing full well she does*

“Nooooooooooo!” *runs off*

We’ve changed over to Huggies pants which has made life a tad easier but it’s still a battle most of the time.

We seem to use the pushchair less and less these days. Jasmine’s stopped asking to be picked up every 5 minutes like she was last month and is quite happy to walk a fair distance now. Whether it’s in the direction she’s supposed to be going is another matter entirely!

What is really sweet is that she loves helping me with chores around the house such as feeding the pets, wiping tables, sweeping up, watering the plants. I try to think of ways to get her involved with tasks as much as possible but she does get cross when she’s unable to do something either because she’s still a bit too small or because it’s not safe. Just check out this photo of her trying to vaccum with a big heavy Dyson for evidence of that:

Sleep:

Jasmine’s sleeping patterns were a bit all over the place at the start of the month. Especially whilst she had 4 canine teeth (top and bottom) coming through at once. To top it off she was also poorly with a cough and cold at the same time.

She’s sleeping better at the moment but it’s taking her a lot longer to settle down at night. She’s often reluctant to go to bed but normally once she’s asleep she will sleep though until the morning and wakes up around 7.30am.

Naps have stayed fairly consistent (although again, she is reluctant to take them) but once asleep she will usually nap for 1-2 hours in the afternoon after lunch.

This month Jasmine:

  • Had a great Christmas at home this year. She was far more into it and was able to unwrap her own presents (and everybody else’s). She also devoured her Christmas dinner!

  • Enjoyed a visit to Hollow Trees Farm in Suffolk. (You can read the review/watch the video of our visit here.)
  • Started walking all the way home from nursery so I’ve now ditched the buggy for nursery runs.
  • Continued to surprise us with lots of new words every day.
  • Had another visit to our local soft play centre and loved it!

Likes: Dancing to her BeatBo toy, Bunny, her Happyland Zoo, red pepper, bathtime, helping me with jobs around the house, splashing in muddy puddles, being outside, building Mega Bloc towers with Daddy.

Dislikes: nappy changes, getting out of the bath, being dressed, being in the pushchair.

Lovely photographs. My daughter is 16 months and is already starting to cut down on her nap time. I need her to hold on to them for a little longer! It’s the only time I have to get things done! xx

    • Jenna January 12, 2016 / 10:11 pm

Agghh no! I dread the day that the naps end, I really do! x

aww she’s looking so grown up! Bear hates nappy changes too, it’s driving me mad, it normally takes a 10 min chase followed by a wrestling match just to get her on the changing mat! xx

    • Jenna January 12, 2016 / 9:51 pm

Tell me about it, every day I look at her and think “when did you get so big?!”

Ah yeah, that sounds about right. Nappy changes are a pain in the arse!

A lovely update! Love that she likes getting involved with helping you out, it’s currently Amelia’s favourite thing to help although often it isn’t very helpful. Amelia went through a phase of hating nappy changes and used to run and hide, lol! Not long until she’s 2, scary how fast it comes around! xx

    • Jenna January 12, 2016 / 10:02 pm

Yes, I know what you mean – sometimes Jasmine wants to help with things that are a bit beyond her capabilities!

I hope she gets over the nappy-hating phase soon. It gets boring real quick! x

Ah bless her those teeth are horrid when they come in! Sounds like she’s growing beautifully! My little 4 yr old is such a diva , the tantrums for us are getting better but its more attitude now … lol.

    • Jenna January 12, 2016 / 10:03 pm

Oh yes, I used to work in a nursery with 4-year-olds and I remember how much they think they know it all. As bad as teenagers with their attitudes sometimes!! xx

Wow she is a good girl, I wish my 2 and a half year old was so good with sleep and eating.
Love the black and white photo.

    • Jenna January 12, 2016 / 10:03 pm

Haha – I’m making the most of it while it lasts! ;) xx

This age can be so testing can’t it with the independence increasing etc, but It’s also such a lovely age hearing new words and watching them grow into little grown ups! xx

    • Jenna January 12, 2016 / 10:05 pm

It completely astounds me how much she’s come along with her talking – it’s so much fun interacting with her that much more. You’re right though, it certainly has it’s challenging moments! x

Oh bless her – such gorgeous photos. Time flies doesn’t it? Hang on to every moment, my eldest is 20 this year!! Kaz x

    • Jenna January 12, 2016 / 10:06 pm

Thanks so much, Kaz. Arrghh, it’s scary how fast it all goes. I wish I could slow it down a little! xx

oh sleeping can be really tricky when little ones are teething. I used a herbal remedy and it really helped my daughter to sleep. I love your little badge too. Very cute!

    • Jenna January 12, 2016 / 10:07 pm

Thankfully her teeth pop through relatively quickly but it’s never much fun in the week or so before they do! xx

  9. Avatar January 12, 2016 / 7:52 am

It sounds like she’s doing so well. I love the photos too. What a cheeky girl

    • Jenna January 12, 2016 / 10:09 pm

Thanks, Jodie – she certainly is pretty cheeky! x

  10. Avatar January 12, 2016 / 11:54 am

Oh my gosh, she’s such a peach and I love that coat. Argghhhh tell me about hatred for nappy changes! Bane of my life! Lovely post xx

    • Jenna January 12, 2016 / 10:10 pm

      Thanks, Amanda!

Haha, glad it’s not just me with a nappy-hating toddler!! xx

  11. Avatar January 13, 2016 / 12:54 am

Love the photos. Sounds like she’s doing good and enjoying life. It gets hard when naps dissappear. I always find eva is more cranky. They are so funny when they get to that independent age. Enjoy her x

    • Jenna January 13, 2016 / 8:56 am

      Thank you, Kerry.

She is definitely more grumpy if she doesn’t have a nap! I don’t think she’s ready to drop them yet. xx

  12. Avatar January 13, 2016 / 9:01 pm

Love that photo of her with the vacuum!! She still looks beautiful even having a strop. We have had a really grumpy week with the twins which I think is part terrible twos and part teething. This age is so much fun but also so challenging as they start to assert their independence, second time round I definitely laugh about it a lot more! xx

    • Jenna January 13, 2016 / 10:48 pm

Thanks Hayley, it’s one of my favourite photos ever – it’s positively ridiculous. :)

I think you’re right to laugh it off – I know I do sometimes and then Jasmine usually ends up cracking a smile too! xx

  13. Avatar January 14, 2016 / 4:25 pm

Oh bless :) She is so beautiful. That hoover photos is hilarious and so adorable

    • Jenna January 15, 2016 / 2:35 pm

I laugh every time I look at that photo. I think I’ll get that picture iced onto her 18th birthday cake. ;) x

  14. Avatar January 15, 2016 / 9:14 pm

Oh bless, Jasmine, she is such a cutie. Even when throwing a barny about hoovering. That photo of her clutching all her animal pals is adorable. She sounds like a typical toddler to me. It is so hard when they want to do everything themselves but really can’t. I found that with Little Miss H it helped if I gave her choices, so which book to read, which PJs to wear etc. She felt she was exerting some independence but wasn’t getting totally frustrated. They are so much fun at this age. Hugs Lucy xxxx

    • Jenna January 18, 2016 / 9:27 pm

Thank you, Lucy. The hoovering photo cracks me up every time I look at it. That’s a good point about giving choices and I try to do that when I can but she’s still a bit too young to realise what I mean – often she thinks she can have both! ;) It is a lovely age and she makes me smile so much every day. I love learning more about her personality and her little quirks. xx

  15. Avatar January 19, 2016 / 2:52 pm

She’s looking so grown up! We’re on the three month countdown until 2nd birthday too and my goodness it’s scary! x

    • Jenna January 19, 2016 / 3:23 pm

      Isn’t she just?!

I’m both dreading and looking forward to her second birthday in equal measure! xx

  16. Avatar January 22, 2016 / 5:17 pm

Aww so cute, such a fun age :) thankfully W has gotten much better at nappy changes now, as long as he’s got something else to focus on like TV to watch or a toy car in his hand, he’s ok with it! I’ve been thinking about trying pull-ups though, you’ll have to write a post about that! Xx

    • Jenna January 25, 2016 / 2:51 pm

Pull ups have definitely helped as I think it was the laying down part that Jasmine didn’t like. She likes stepping into her pull-ups and it makes her a bit more involved with the process of changing her nappy. If I ever find the time then I’ll try to write a post about it. xx
