My Dressing Table Declutter

I’ve had a love/hate relationship with my dressing table since I bought it a little over two years ago. Firstly, sitting and looking at myself in a mirror is not exactly my favourite pastime. It’s one of the reasons I avoid going to the hairdressers. Small talk and mirrors = two of my least favourite things. *shudders* Anyway, despite my self-loathing (I’m working on fixing this, honest!), the dressing table is the one place in the house that is mine. A little space just for me.

However, in the last few months I’ve been using that little space less and less. It’s become a dumping ground for various beauty products (OK, mostly products that promise to reduce the appearance of dark eye circles, I’ve got them all), notepads, receipts, jewelry etc. etc. – it was a mess!

And then there was the small issue of the slight cosmetic damage (see what I did there?) from when Hubby put the thing together in the first place. He will gladly admit that flatpack furniture isn’t his forte but it didn’t stop me being any less seething when he’d told me he’d broken my dressing table before I’d even had a chance to break it myself. It’s just a small imperfection on the top of the table but it bugs the hell out of me.

On Wednesday I decided that instead of using Jasmine’s nap time to sit on my arse and scroll through my Instagram feed, I’d clear my dressing table of clutter and make it a nice, usable space again. I bought some cheap (as in, less than a quid) brightly coloured room stickers to decorate the table with. I thought it would be a clever way of covering that unsightly chip in the wood, once and for all!

Here’s how it looked to begin with:

My inner neat freak is blushing right now!

And that poor cactus plant is parched!

That ‘cosmetic damage’ I mentioned earlier.

And here’s how my dressing table looks after a good ol’ decluttering session…

I added my bargain stickers and covered up the offending mark in the wood. ;)

I picked up this handy little make up organiser for about a fiver in Home Bargains.

I even organised the inside of my drawers (steady now!)….

I used these plastic containers, meant for craft storage, to keep my jewelry neat and tidy. These were also cheap as chips from Home Bargains.

Lovely and organised, just how I like it!

A little bit of newborn Jasmine squidgyness to make me smile.

And the end result…

Much better! :)

I have now been bitten by the the decluttering bug! I’m desperate to clear out more of the messy areas of our house because it feels oh-so-satisfying when it’s done!

Are there any areas of your home that could do with a bit of de-cluttering?

Oh, I love the end result. I don’t have a dressing table at the moment and I really miss one. And my make-up and jewellery currently lurk in boxes in the wardrobe. I hate it. I love the look of those makeup caddies and using the craft storage for jewellery is a genius idea. Hugs Mrs H xxxx

    • Jenna July 21, 2015 / 9:47 pm

      Thanks, Mrs H.

Oh no, that sounds like a bit of a pain. Hopefully you’ll have the perfect space for a lovely dressing table in your next home. :)

The make-up caddie is perfect and exactly what I was after. I’m also very glad I won’t have to waste anymore time untangling my necklaces and bracelets. It’s much better now that they’re all kept separately in neat little trays. :D xx

It’s made a massive difference. Looks great! I really need a couple of those organising trays. I have my stuff just thrown in a dish but everything gets tangled up. It’s a right pain.

    • Jenna July 21, 2015 / 9:49 pm

      Thanks very much, Rachel! :)

Ugh yes, that’s exactly what mine were like and it was a right pain. I never ended up wearing any of my lovely jewelry because I didn’t have the time or patience to untangle it all! x

It looks lovely and definitely worth doing. I’ve had a bit of a declutter recently and even though I love cute little nick nacks everything really does look cleaner and neater without them!
I love the use of a sticker to hide that ‘small cosmetic damage’ haha!

    • Jenna July 21, 2015 / 9:51 pm

      Thanks, Leanne. :)

Oh yes, I’m a big lover of cute nick nacks too – but I end up with so many of them. Less is more I suppose! ;)

Ha, glad you like my use of stickers. What cosmetic damage?! ;) x

This is lush! Well done you. I would have been fuming at the mark too! Even if I covered it over! Where did you get the lights? xx #mummymondays

    • Jenna July 21, 2015 / 9:58 pm

Ah, thank you so much Sarah! :)

Haha, glad you don’t think I was overreacting to damage-gate. I was in quite a huff! ;)

Lights are from cable and cotton (co.uk) and they are lovely. You can pick your own colours too. xx

Excellent use of nap time! I love the lanterns around your dressing table and those craft containers are a great idea. My dressing table was a real mess until recently. It was covered in muslins and maternity clothes that don’t fit me. I had a little declutter myself but it’s no where as pretty as your effort #mummymonday

    • Jenna July 21, 2015 / 10:00 pm

Thanks, Claire – I don’t often use nap time productively! ;)

I often end up using the sofa bed in the spare room (where this table is) as a dumping ground for clean laundry and clothes that need sorting for charity shops. That’s next on the hit list! x

I LOVE the end result – my OCD side loves this. Neat and tidy…love that organiser for all your products :) Looks gorgeous and what a wonderful space for you to get ready! Amazing what you can achieve when you’re on a mission isn’t it? With moving house I have been ruthless with my stuff – i want this now though!! :) Jess xx

    • Jenna July 21, 2015 / 10:02 pm

Thanks, Jess! :) I am so, SO much happier now that it looks neat and tidy. I’ve promised myself not to let it get in such a state again!

I’m feeling even more motivated to tidy up other areas of the house now. What’s happening to me?! :D

      xx

Good job! My whole life needs decluttering! I have so much to do but lacking the time :(

    • Jenna July 21, 2015 / 10:04 pm

Haha, oh Sian – I totally hear ya on that one.

This is just the start – the rest of my house is a total mess most of the time! That’s what a toddler will do to ya! :) x

That looks great! I recently decluttered my kitchen worktops. My husband asked if he was in the right kitchen :-) It feels so much better though.

    • Jenna July 21, 2015 / 10:05 pm

      Thanks, Joanna! :)

Hahaha, our kitchen worktops are ridiculous at the mo – SO much stuff on them. It annoys me no end. I’m on a mission to sell the tommee tippee prep machine and sterliser this week though. That will give us a huge chunk of room back. xx

The end tidied version looks fab I find my dressing table is either super tidy or a huge mess! The makeup tidier is great for keeping all those bits organised. Bet it feels great now that’ it’s tidy…if it still is!!! Xx

    • Jenna July 21, 2015 / 10:06 pm

Thank you, Alice – I am so much happier with it now that it’s tidied. It was driving me nuts before!

I’m pleased to stay that is still tidy… how long that will last is anyone’s guess! ;) xx

Firstly, I’m so jealous, I would love a dressing table. Yours is so lovely! Really like all the organisers and dividers #HomeEtc

    • Jenna July 23, 2015 / 3:50 pm

Thank you Rebecca, it’s just a cheap one from Argos, nothing fancy. Saw it as an opportunity to personalise it and make it my own. :) xx

I bloomin’ love a good declutter! It’s so therapeutic, you’ve done a great job and I love all the colours too X #HomeEtc

    • Jenna July 23, 2015 / 3:54 pm

      Thanks, Lins!

It really is therapeutic. I mean, it’s one of those jobs that I will put off for as long as possible but I’m always glad I’ve done it when I’ve finished.

I NEED those craft storage boxes in my life…just so I can organise everything! I actually let out an ‘oooh’ when I saw them. Any surface in our house ends up looking like this…we definitely need to declutter and organise so thank you for sharing and it does all look very pretty now xx

    • Jenna July 23, 2015 / 4:00 pm

Aren’t they brilliant? And so cheap too. I think I’m going to get some more for all my other bits and bobs. I did an ‘oooh’ when I saw them in the shop! :)

Oh and I know how you feel, this is just the start, I have SO much more to do. Our house is a bit of a sty at the moment!! xx

    • Jenna July 23, 2015 / 4:02 pm

Honestly, it felt SO good to see it looking lovely and tidy afterwards. :)

  13. Avatar July 22, 2015 / 8:02 pm

It looks great! There’s nothing like a good de-clutter, is there? I have little plastic trays in my dressing table drawer too – they’re so great for jewellery and make-up! #HomeEtc

    • Jenna July 23, 2015 / 4:04 pm

      Thank you, Lizzie.

Oh definitely – I love that I can actually use my dressing table again, and not just for dumping things on! :)

The plastic trays are perfect for dressing table drawers – no more tangled up jewellery. Woohoo! xx

  14. Avatar July 23, 2015 / 10:15 am

It looks great – and those stickers make a great cover up for that cosmetic damage. Love the storage organisers too. #homeetc

    • Jenna July 23, 2015 / 4:06 pm

      Thank you, Stephanie.

I’ll be honest, I was bit worried that the stickers would make it look tacky but I think I’ve managed to pull it off. It’s nice to add some colour to what was quite a plain piece of furniture and it works better with the rest of the room now.

  15. Avatar July 23, 2015 / 9:16 pm

Aah stuff like this makes me happy!! When things are in a state of disarray you can’t stop thinking about it — although often I just shut the drawer/door and pretend it’s not there!!

Then the *relief* you feel when it’s all sorted and tidy is just like a weight being lifted!!! I LOVE a good declutter!!

*not to self — must do desk drawers!

Thanks so much for linking up with #HomeEtc — hope to see you again next week! x

Must admit, I am nightmare for thinking “If I can’t see it, it’s not there” so my wardrobes, cupboards and drawers are normally such a mess inside. However, this little decluttering session has spurred me on to trying to sort them all out though. eeek!

      Thanks for hosting lovely. xx

  16. Avatar July 24, 2015 / 11:25 pm

I love how bright and colourful it looks! I also love that you said cheap as chips hehe but i am definitely going to home bargins this week I love the make up organiser you have got thats great! xx

    • Jenna July 25, 2015 / 10:10 am

Thanks Amy – I love using bright colours in that room. Heh, ‘cheap as chips’ is a great term!

Definitely get yourself one of those organisers, it’s so handy! xx

  17. Avatar July 25, 2015 / 7:25 am

There are so many places I need to do this too, the end result is always so worthwhile isn’t it.

    • Jenna July 25, 2015 / 10:28 am

Snap! I’ve got so much more to do. It really is worth doing though, I’m so much happier with it now. xx

      xx

Wow what a difference some decluttering can make eh? I bet you love your new space and the little personal touchses – love that squidginess picture – really make it so special. Where did you get the stickers from if you don’t mind me asking? #HomeEtc

    • Jenna July 30, 2015 / 12:07 pm

It’s made such a big difference and I’m really loving being able to use my dressing table again.

Oh yes, had to have a bit of baby squidgyness in there. :)

The stickers were also from Home Bargains and cost less than a pound! Bargain. xx
